Dr. Olivia Gosseries
Dr Olivia GOSSERIES is a neuropsychologist (PhD in Biomedical Sciences), FNRS qualified researcher and co-director of the Coma Science Group at the GIGA Consciousness of the University of Liege. She studies pathological, physiological and pharmacological changes in consciousness using behavioral assessments and brain imaging. Her early work focused on the diagnosis and prognosis of patients with disorders of consciousness after coma using non-invasive brain stimulation and electrophysiology. More recently, she is interested in developing new treatments for this fragile population. To study human consciousness more generally, she also studies anesthesia, near-death experiences, lucid dreaming, meditation, hypnosis and cognitive trance.
Dr. Audrey Vanhaudenhuyse
Dr Audrey VANHAUDENHUYSE is a neuropsychologist (PhD in Medical Sciences). She is interested in modified consciousness processes (hypnosis, cognitive trance). She is a researcher at the Algology Department of the University Hospital of Liege and also leads the Sensation & Perception Research Group at GIGA Consciousness. Her objectives are to develop research paradigms in order to evaluate the contribution of tools involving techniques such as hypnosis, virtual reality, music or cognitive trance for the global well-being of patients (chronic pain, oncology, burns, intensive care, etc.), and to study their neural correlates in order to better understand the processes underlying these particular states.
Nolwenn Marie
Nolwenn MARIE is a neuropsychologist and doctoral student in Medical Science. She is a member of the Sensation & Perception Research Group and the Coma Science Group. Her work aims at improving the understanding of altered states of consciousness and their therapeutic applications in post-treatment oncology patients. She is jointly studying the effect of cognitive trance, hypnosis and meditation and their mechanisms of action on physical and psychological symptoms in order to improve the quality of life of patients. Her research also aims to study the short and long term impact of these phenomena at the electrophysiological, phenomenological and behavioral levels.
On October 1, the 3 researchers will present a lecture entitled:

"During this session, we will first present the eventful journey of 3 ULiege researchers: Nolwenn Marie, Dr Audrey Vanhaudenhuyse and Dr Olivia Gosseries. Then we will invite you to explore the universe of altered and modified states of consciousness, through pathology (coma and other related states), physiology (hypnosis, self-induced cognitive trance, sleep) and pharmacology (anesthesia). The goal is to give you an overview of what neuroscience research with clinical applications can look like. At the end of the session, you will have the opportunity to test a virtual reality system used in our research to instantly transport you to another world!"
